Activities: The Heart and Soul of The Johnson Center Program“Get up and go” is the philosophy at The Johnson Center. Fun-filled good times are the order of every day at the Center (see our Events Calendar for entertainment and special theme events). Participants engage in activities throughout the day that keep them moving while enhancing socialization and stimulating brain power. Preserving mobility is essential for optimal wellness and independence. Both client and caregiver benefit (see our Participant Profiles for how participants respond to our programs).
Exercises, walking, dancing and music are always on the agenda (see us in action by checking out the Photo Gallery). Activities are interspersed with short breaks—transition periods that allow one-on-one interaction with staff, a chance to visit with a friend or a “settling in” time before a change of activities.
Different Spaces - Different NeedsThe Johnson Center has seven activity rooms and will soon add another. Each room is customized to meet the needs, interests and the changing abilities of participants. Lunch is served at a table setting in four of these specialized rooms. This provides a unique continuum of care, optimal socialization and a day-to-day flexibility of services for each participant, unparalleled in Denver’s adult day service industry.
Daytrips and excursions are tailored for full or half-day duration and for a variety of abilities. They may involve a short lunch out or a trip to a cultural event. Family members, friends and caregivers are invited to come to the Center to enjoy lunch or for afternoon entertainment (see Activities Calendar) with advance notice.
High Impact Days are a unique offering at The Johnson Center. At this time, the program is an all-male group, designed for more active and able participants who enjoy all-day hikes, sports and more vigorous, lengthy activities. Serving much like a support group for those with early-stage dementia, it is not necessary for participants in High Impact Days to be regular attendees at The Johnson Adult Day Center.
We are pleased to be working closely with the health professionals at Garden Terrace in providing free screening to our participants who may be helped by a wide range of rehabilitation therapies from Occupational to speech to physical therapy. Professionals at Garden Terrace are specially trained to offer outpatient services to people with mild cognitive impairment and early-onset dementia, swallowing difficulty, peripheral neuropathy, orthopedic injury or neurological impairment. A permission slip is required.
We are now working even more closely with the physicians who care for our participants. Every six months we send a Participant Progress Update to participant physicians. The report indicates our understanding of medications, health and behavioral issues that relate to the participant’s care. This helps both the doctor and the Center staff address the changing health care needs of our participants and encourages close communications between health professionals and families.
The Johnson Center now offers the latest in computer-aided technologies for elders and those with disabilities. It’s Never 2 Late is an adaptive computer lab connecting seniors and caregivers with technology. A touch screen and simple ease-of-use e-mail program are available. Knowledge of computer usage is not required. Elders and those with impairments can enjoy history, travel, television and radio programs. Participants can stay in touch with family members all over the world. Computer-related activities provide excellent brain stimulation. Virtual visits to museums around the world and nostalgic visual tours of historic events are all available. You’ll want to learn about the adaptive use of the computer to enhance the life of elders with cognitive impairments.
