First time daytrippers may approach their first daytrip with some trepidations because any new routine is hard for those with memory loss. However there is a tremendous and very common need for socialization and a sense of normalcy that the daytripping experience can provide to participants. When enjoying an excursion, a person may no longer have to “hide” their illness or apologize for their lapses in memory. Others on the trip may have the same issues. Because of the small group atmosphere, daytrippers can easily chat with newfound friends and share special times together. Participants and their family members often develop close-knit relationships creating a kind of support group.
Family members are often amazed with the changes in the countenance of their loved ones after an outing. “I can tell at dinner time if Francis has gone daytripping by her energy and animated conversation.”
Caregivers benefit immensely by having a day of much needed respite. Daytripping staff offer family members important, objective assessment and feedback information about participants that can be helpful and affirming to family caregivers.
Over the years, more early onset Alzheimer’s participants have joined us for outings. They often show very dramatic changes in their behavior and mood. By meeting others in their 50s and 60s, a quasi support group emerges. Younger participants readily help the older ones and this promotes positive self-esteem.
Couples often enjoy using ArtReach tickets to attend concerts, operas, plays and sporting events. Having escorted couples to some events, I have witnessed wonderful changes and have cried for joy when I see couples smiling from ear to ear during a performance, having fun, relaxing and socializing as they return, if only for a moment, to the normal life and pleasures they remember.
It has been my privilege to accompany many fine people on the 1250 trips I have taken with participants. They honor me with their journey through Alzheimer’s. We have shared both joys and sorrows. By hearing their life stories and by making new memories on these trips together, my life has been truly enriched forever.
